The Catholic tradition (Gregory the Great in Evangelium Homiliae 2, 33) equates the sinner sometimes cited in the Gospel of Luke (VII, 36-50) and incorporated in the medieval legend of Saintes Maries in the also identifying with Mary of Bethany, sister of Lazarus and Martha. Provencal tradition, which includes the identification, said after landed at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and have evangelized the region, Mary Magdalene would have lived throughout the rest of his life in prayer in the cave today Shrine of Sainte-Baume (Massif de la Sainte-Baume). His tomb at Saint-Maximin la Sainte Baume (France), kept by the Dominican [1] is considered as the 3rd shrine of Christendom.
Gregory of Tours, in turn, place in 590 the tomb of Mary Magdalene at Ephesus in Asia Minor: "This city is Mary Magdalene, having over it no roof" (In Gloria Martyrium, ch. 29, PL, t. 71, c. 731). The remains of Mary Magdalene was likely based in the atrium before a shrine, typically Ephesian tradition.
Considered sacred by the Catholic Church, is celebrated July 22.
