The Cross of Jerusalem is an ancient emblem of the Eastern Christians.
According to tradition, the emblem of Jerusalem (silver, cross potent gold croslets between four different) willfully contravenes rules of heraldry, the better to mark the special status of this city. Indeed, the heraldry forbidden "overlay" of the same materials. In this case, the cross - gold - are superimposed on the silver background.
Its origin dates back perhaps to the Phoenicians in the form of a white cross (sometimes green) with eight points. They said it represented the eight beatitudes of Christ.
